Art is a luxury like an elaborate pastry is a luxury. We don’t need it to survive, but what is life without a regular injection of beautiful, sensory joys?

You could make it yourself, but if you aren’t doing that, it makes the most sense to pay someone to make it for you. 

Bakery Paper addresses the ways that artists are constantly navigating the challenges of creating work in contemporary society. Can one make art that is sustainably produced, handmade but accessibly priced, striking in its technique and compelling in subject matter? How far we can treat the individual practice of art-making like a small business? Somewhere in the relationship between art and commerce sits the exhibit shop.  Cakes and cookies are 3D cast paper made with traditional and custom molds. The gallery is arranged as a Bakery: table and chairs, a case for smaller works, and works on the wall that represent several ways I’ve explored how to present “a little treat” in this economy: print, paint, charcoal and installation. Much of the work is made from recycled material. 

In one corner we can see the full kitchen, as much as possible in the gallery space - much of the equipment is the same as a commercial kitchen, and the process of making through physical labor is as transparent as possible. It is work. It is Work.
